Attention researchers: if you're trying to do web scraping for a research project, please ask your institution to subscribe (https://ctext.org/tools/subscribe) instead. Subscriptions are currently our only source of revenue - supporting free access for everyone - and only happen when students or staff ask their institutions to do it. It's actually very cheap from the point of view of the institution and typically you don't need to use your own research funding (libraries have budgets for this), since we aren't trying to make money here, just trying to keep the service available for everyone for free. Subscription gives access to a very easy to use JSON API and Python module that lets you get way more data - and importantly, if you're doing actual research, way more *accurate* data - than you will with web scraping. Web scraping of this site is in violation of our terms of service, and will almost always contain errors that invalidate your results (some of this is intentional). Just to be clear: the particular anti-scraping mechanism you're looking at now is, sadly due to necessity, one of many.
